A bone marrow drive is being held in Simi Valley next weekend for a Newbury Park girl battling a rare disease.

It’s been a year and a half since Mia Stoutenborough, a water polo, tennis and swimming athlete at Newbury Park High School, began having seizures. Last January, Mia was diagnosed with a rare type of bone marrow failure that prevents bone marrow from producing enough red and white blood cells and platelets called Aplastic Anemia.

Since her diagnosis, she undergoes weekly blood cell and platelet transfusions to stay alive. Mia is not seeing results and must receive a bone marrow transplant.

In light of her medical needs, the bone marrow drive will be from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sat., April 24 at the pre-race packet pickup event for the fourth annual Gator Run at Simi Valley Town Center.

The Simi Sunset Rotary Club’s Gator Run is at 7:30 a.m. Sun., April 25 at Rancho Santa Susana Community Park.

Shoe Drive in Simi Valley

From 3/14 – 3/21, we are organizing a shoe drive right here in Wood Ranch. In order to contribute to Soles4Souls, we are hosting our own shoe drive by collecting all types of “gently worn shoes.” Soles4shoes will then distribute all the shoes we collect to people in need.  In the last 5 years, Soles4Souls has distributed to over 125 countries; places like Kenya, Nepal, Thailand and the U.S. This is a great chance for everyone in the community to get involved and help others who aren’t as fortunate as us.

Feel free to drop new or gently worn shoes to any of these 3 locations.

We have a friend who had been working with Wells Fargo on a loan modification (so she thought). Feeling confident that the process was being properly handled by the bank, she took no further action.

One day a stranger knocked on her door claiming ownership of her home which would theoretically require her to vacate the property. Stunned, she immediately contacted the bank to find out that the loan modification was not approved due to missing paperwork.  The bank, in their haste or apathy, failed to notify the homeowner of her auction date. Due to lack of communication, her home foreclosed and was sold at a public auction.

The banks are so overwhelmed with people facing mortgage challenges and attempting to modify their loans that it’s very easy to have the auction date over looked. Needless to say she tearfully moved out 2 weeks later and currently faces the repercussions of a foreclosure on her credit.

Similar situations are happening on an unthinkable scale. After watching our friend go through this first hand, we’ve vowed to help those home owners stay informed and remain in their homes. Let us help you if we can. You have OPTIONS…

Cajun and Blues Festival a perfect memorial day activity

Complete with Clydesdales pulling the Budweiser wagon with dalmatians sitting atop, the Simi Cajun Festival was a hit. For those who missed the amazing event, the event hosted fabulous music such as John Nemeth, Maria Buldaur and unbelievable choices of food. The jambalaya was killer and I hear the crawfish wasn’t bad either.

Simi Valley Hosts the Blues and Cajun Festival

The 22nd annual Cajun and Blues Music Festival in Simi Valley will be held this Memorial Day weekend, May 28th & 29th. 2011 promises. The Cajun and Blues festival will continue its tradition of bringing nonstop music, spicy food and activities to keep the kids going all day.

Stage one will have 9 hours of continuous music each day with international and award winning Cajun, Creole and Zydeco music acts. The second stage will be pumping with Delta Groove All-Star Blues Revue on Saturday and world-class blues and roots acts on Sunday.

Pot Pie for the Chilly Weather

1 package pie crust
Roasted turkey or chicken
1/4 cup butter
1/3 cup flour
1/3 cup onion
1 1/2 cup chicken broth
1/2 cup milk
2 cups mixed veggies

Heat oven to 425. Place pie crust in pie pan. (Your pie pan works amazing lol). In sauce pan melt butter over med heat add onions, cook till tender, about 2 mins. Stir in flour salt n pepper. Cook stirring constantly till bubbly; remove from heat. Stir in broth and milk. Heat till boiling, stirring constantly. Boil and stir 1 minute. Stir in turkey or chicken and vegtables, remove from heat. Spoon mixture over crust. Place second crust over filling. Flute edge cut several slits in top. Bake at 425 for 35 or 40 mins. Or until golden brown.
